Jason forced a grin to his face. “You got me.”

“Thought so.”

It seemed to break the tension.

“I didn’t mean to make you feel uneasy with all the questions.” He jerked a thumb back toward the ex. “I don’t want to get mixed up in that. You got something going on there. I want no part.”

Brandy frowned. It didn’t appear she heard him. It now occurred to Jason she’d been watching her rearview mirror ever since they passed the man.

“What is he doing now?”

Jason cringed. Too late. He looked over his shoulder and saw the ex was back in his truck.

“He’s chasing me down,” she said.

Again.

She didn’t say it, but this was obviously how the script had played out before.

Jason imagined he could hear the wheels of the red Dodge truck squealing as the man tried to catch up. He had to be going over a hundred miles an hour to close the distance as fast as he was.

It wasn’t long before he was right behind. He honked his horn. He flashed his headlights.

“How many times has he done this?”

“Never mind.” Brandy paled. “I should warn you. He’s not a pleasant man.”

“No kidding.”

“This is gonna be bad.”

“Are you thinking of pulling over?”

“It gets worse if I don’t.”

Jason could make eye contact with the man; he was now that close. He let out a wordless howl Jason couldn’t hear.

“He does not look happy.”

“He’s the jealous type.”

“You can’t just explain you picked up a hitchhiker?”

“Not really.”

“Are you going to try chatting while he’s screaming?”

“He’ll calm down.”

“After doing what?”

She didn’t answer.

“What happens if you just keep going?”

“It’s not good.”

“Don’t stop. I think this time is different.”

“It’ll be over in just a few minutes,” she said, slowing and pulling over to the side of the road. “He’s all bark. Not much bite.”

Jason glanced back again. The man now held a pistol.
